May 12 is International Awareness Day for Fibromyalgia (FM), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
Imagine, if you can, your limbs feeling like they’re encased in lead, your joints constantly aching, all day and night. You lack energy to do everyday things like take a carton of milk out of the fridge. You’re exhausted but you can’t always sleep, and when sleep does come you don’t feel rested. Your mind is in a constant fog, unable to think straight or remember simple things. Depression and anxiety weigh you down. Just getting out of bed is a challenge.
For patients diagnosed with FM, ME and CFS these are all challenges faced every single day. Collectively these conditions affect over 900,000 Canadians, and there is no cure.
While medical science works to find a cure for these conditions, patients dealing with the symptoms may find some relief.
Typically symptoms for FM, ME & CFS are treated with painkillers, antidepressants, sleeping pills, and other medications. We’ve heard from our patients that medical cannabis provides an attractive alternative - or addition - to traditional treatment, allowing them to address multiple symptoms with one medication and fewer risks.
Medical cannabis has helped patients to:
- Reduce pain
- Assist in providing restful sleep
- Improve mood
- Increase appetite while decreasing nausea
- Relieve muscle tension and restless leg syndrome
If you, or someone you know, has FM/ME/CFS medical cannabis may provide the relief you need. Talk to your doctor about your treatment and whether cannabis is right for you. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have – we’re here to help.
