Cannabis oil is fast becoming a very popular way for our patients to enjoy the medicinal benefits of cannabis without smoking or vaporization. Not only is this the ideal delivery system for patients with chronic breathing problems, but it is also far more convenient for those with nausea , in palliative care, or for children suffering with severe forms of epilepsy.
Our oil products are made using only dried cannabis flowers, with no leaf, trimmings or waste material, to ensure potency and consistent dosage.
To make the oil, food grade alcohol is pumped through compressed herbal flower materials, which extracts all the precious medicinal ingredients. Then excess water and alcohol are removed through evaporation. What’s left is a thick, black substance: pure cannabis resin. The resin is mixed with olive oil and heated, activating the medicinal elements. Once complete, additional olive oil is then added to ensure the cannabis oil is the right concentration. Finally, the oil is laboratory tested for quality, safety and potency, and then shipped to our patients!
What’s the right dose for me? Is it the same as the dried cannabis?
Oils are not directly equivalent to dried cannabis and dosing should be measured separately. Having said that, how much weight of dried is converted into how much oil is very simple:
1 gram of dried cannabis = 6 mL of cannabis oil
Each 60 mL bottle of CanniMed Oil is equivalent to 10 grams of the dried product.
In terms of dosing: start low and go slow. Each person reacts differently to cannabis oil based on a number of factors such as weight, metabolism, and medical condition. It’s a process of discovery and it will likely take a little time to find your ideal dosage. Call or email us for guidance specific to your unique condition – we’re here to help.
How do I take it?
Cannabis oil is ready for dosing and should be ingested. Do NOT smoke or vaporize cannabis oil.
The simplest way to take the oil is simply to swallow it, or place the droplets under your tongue and let them absorb through the skin. For a consistent effect we suggest you administer each dose the same way.
Patients ask us if they can bake with their oils. We do not suggest this as your oil will be diluted into the recipe and may reduce in potency with additional heating.
How will it affect me?
When ingested, cannabis oil is processed through the liver. This means that it typically takes longer to have a noticeable effect than when it is smoked or vaporized. The flip side to this is that the effects last longer. It can take anywhere from 1 – 1.5 hours before you feel anything, and up to 2 – 4 hours to reach peak effect.
Be patient when taking cannabis oil, and wait at least 4 hours after the first dose before taking a second.
