Frequently Asked Questions

What is CanniMed® Topical Cream?

CanniMed Topical Cream is a fusion of CanniMed’s industry-leading medical cannabis oil with the KalayaTM Carrier Base Gel created by Avaria Health & Beauty, one of Canada’s leading experts in advanced creams, gels, lotions and salves.

How can I purchase CanniMed Topical Cream? Does it require authorization from my doctor?

Because CanniMed Topical Cream Kits contain cannabis, patients require authorization from their medical practitioners in order to access it. Registered CanniMed patients can purchase a topicals kit that contains the KalayaTM Carrier Base Gel and their choice of CanniMed Oil® 10:10 or CanniMed Oil® 1:20 —cannabis oils that are CBD-based and contain limited amounts of THC.

Can I purchase just the Carrier Base Gel if I’m not registered with CanniMed?

Unfortunately no, not at this time. The Carrier Base Gel is only available to CanniMed patients.

You don’t offer a kit with the CanniMed® Oil 18:0, can I use it with the Carrier Base Gel to make an 18:0 topical cream?

CBD is more effective than THC at attaching to the cannabinoid receptors in your skin and muscle tissue, which is why our topical product feature high CBD concentrations. While the gel could be used with any of CanniMed’s oils, patients are recommended to use high CBD products for best effect.

Why do I have to mix the cream myself? Can’t you sell it pre-mixed?

Under Health Canada’s Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations, it’s illegal to sell ready-made cannabis creams. That’s why CanniMed Topical Cream is combined at home by the patient. Pour the 60 ml CanniMed Oil® into the 120 ml KalayaTM Carrier Base Gel jar. Stir to mix, seal the childproof jar and shake vigorously. The clear gel transforms into 180 ml of luxurious cream, the same quality that you’d find at your favourite beauty bar. Rub a small amount into the affected area until it’s fully absorbed.

How does CanniMed Topical Cream affect me compared to ingesting the oil, or vaporizing dried cannabis?

Ingesting and vaporizing medical cannabis allows for the medicinal ingredients to enter your bloodstream and have an effect on your whole body. CanniMed Topical Cream allows you to treat a specific location. For some patients, who have reported relief from pain and inflammation using CanniMed Topical Cream on the affected area, this is the ideal form of treatment.

Will CanniMed Topical Cream make me high?

When used externally for localized relief of pain and inflammation, it is highly unlikely that the cannabinoids in CanniMed Topical Cream will enter your bloodstream and produce a psychoactive effect. If you have concerns about this please contact your physician and/or the CanniMed pharmacist before trying this product.

What makes the CanniMed Topical Cream different from other similar cream products?

CanniMed Topical Cream uses our own industry-leading pharmaceutical-grade medical cannabis oil mixed with KalayaTM Carrier Base Gel, which had been specially formulated by a team of medical experts at Avaria Health & Beauty. Avaria’s patented liposomal technology enhances the penetration and absorption of the cannabinoids through your skin, into your muscles, providing for faster activity with more of the active ingredients reaching the area where you need relief.
